FAA Medical Exams & BasicMed

To keep your flying privileges, you need to stay current with your periodic medical exams—and we’re here to make the process as smooth as possible.

Standard FAA Medical Exams (MedXPress)

If you are pursuing a standard medical certificate, remember to complete your application on the FAA MedXPress website before your appointment.

⚠️ Important 60-Day Window: Once you submit your MedXPress application, you have exactly 60 days to complete your exam with an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). If the 60 days pass without an exam, your application is deleted, and you will have to start over.

The BasicMed Alternative

Want to skip the traditional medical certification? BasicMed is a popular alternative pathway that comes with fewer hassles. Thanks to FAA updates, BasicMed is now more flexible than ever, allowing you to fly aircraft with:

  • A maximum takeoff weight of up to 12,500 lbs

  • Up to 6 passengers (7 total occupants, including the pilot)

For Standard FAA Medical Certificates

To get started on your traditional aviation medical certificate, follow these steps before your appointment:

  1. Submit Your Application: Create an account and fill out Form 8500-8 on the official FAA MedXPress Website.

  2. Bring Your Confirmation Number: Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation number. You must bring this number to your physical exam so your Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) can access your paperwork.

  3. Find an AME: If you haven’t booked with us yet or need to locate an authorized examiner, use the official FAA Designee Locator.

For the BasicMed Alternative

If you qualify for BasicMed, you do not need to use MedXPress. Instead, follow this checklist:

  1. Download the Checklist: Print out the official FAA Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist (CMEC). Fill out the pilot self-assessment portion (Section 2) before seeing a doctor.

  2. Take the checklist to a state-licensed physician to have them complete the physical exam and sign the form.

  3. Take the Free Online Course: After your physical, complete one of the FAA-approved medical education courses to submit your information to the FAA and get your completion certificate:

  4. Log Your Documents: Keep your signed CMEC form and your course completion certificate safely tucked into your pilot logbook. You're ready to fly!

  • Expiration: 12-month validity period for all ages. Once expired, privileges revert to a lower tier.

Alternative Medical Certification An FAA-approved alternative allowing eligible pilots to fly non-commercially without a standard medical certificate.

  • Ideal for: Recreational pilots.

  • Aircraft Caps: Max 12,500 lbs, 6 seats, 18,000 ft altitude, and 250 knots.

  • Maintenance: State-licensed physical exam (every 2 years) + online training course (every 4 years).
