June is Men’s Health Month: Tips for Boosting Your Health

June is Men’s Health Month, making it the perfect time to discuss how men can enhance their health—both physically and mentally. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind as we focus on men’s health this month.

Maintain a Healthy Waistline

An unhealthy waistline can increase your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and strokes. Less than 40 inches is the ideal waistline for men. If your waistline exceeds this measurement, consult your doctor about strategies for weight loss and waist reduction.

To maintain a healthy waistline, consume a diverse range of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and fiber-rich foods. Limit processed foods, as they often contain high levels of salt, sugar, artificial ingredients, and unhealthy fats.

Get Active

Regular exercise is vital for improving both physical and mental well-being. It is one of the most effective ways to prevent heart disease. Aim for aerobic activities each week, such as running, walking, swimming, tennis, or basketball. Additionally, incorporate muscle-strengthening exercises, like weight lifting. Both types of exercise benefit your heart.

Protect Your Skin

While staying active, don’t forget to protect your skin. Activities like group sports, running, walking, swimming, and golfing expose you to direct sunlight. To reduce your risk of skin cancers, especially melanoma, apply and reapply sunscreen as needed and wear protective clothing. Check your skin monthly for any changes, including existing moles or new ones. Finally, schedule a yearly visit to a dermatologist for a comprehensive skin examination.

Schedule Your Exams

Many men tend to avoid doctor visits or ignore symptoms. However, you don’t have to be one of them! Addressing potential issues early and getting regular screenings can significantly improve your health outcomes. Schedule your annual exam, where your doctor can assess your blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight. If any of these areas require attention, your doctor can recommend medications, lifestyle changes, and other treatments.

Two critical areas often overlooked by men are prostate health and colorectal screenings. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men. If you experience pain while urinating or have difficulty urinating, make an appointment with your doctor. Additionally, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Starting around age 50, discuss with your doctor the importance of scheduling screenings for polyps or cancerous growths in your colon.

Seek Help with Your Mental Health

While focusing on your physical health, remember that mental health is equally important. If you are struggling with feelings of anxiety, sadness, or depression, take the first step toward addressing those feelings today. Reach out to a trusted friend and share your thoughts. Engage in regular exercise and spend more time outdoors. If you need additional support, don’t hesitate to contact our team at AllCare. We are here to help!

Stop Unhealthy Habits

If you have unhealthy habits, now is the time to take action. Whether it’s excessive alcohol consumption, recreational drug use, anabolic steroid use, smoking, or exposure to secondhand smoke, these habits can severely impact your health.
